As a little girl I remember seeing my Mama's wedding portrait hanging in the living room and hearing bits and pieces about her wedding. I am a believer that every southern mother barely survives her wedding and in turn decides she will relive her "dream" when her daughter gets married. Well I survived my wedding. When the doctor said "It's a girl!" unlike many of my friends who started planning the wedding that day (may the circle go unbroken) I just prayed my daughters would elope. Twenty eight years later that was not to be. I did not want to relive "the dream", I just hoped to avoid a nightmare. This is the blog about my book, The Mother of Bride Should Never Wear Blue and a Proper Southern Wedding in Never at Low Tide, my story of three weddings.

Altered

A friend of mine passed my book along to his sister-in-law as she prepared for her daughter's wedding. The MOB commented that she had no plans to wear a blue dress. As luck would have it, the daughter announced her engagement just as her parents were being stationed in Hawaii. The bride had her heart set on a destination wedding in Charleston, SC (only 4,672 away or an 11 hour flight).

So the bride stayed in Charleston and planned her wedding while Mom moved west, far west to the Aloha state. The wedding plans moved along, the venue was selected and booked, the band, the caterer, the florist, etc. were engaged. Finally it was time for the mother to come back east for the big event. Having no time before, she pulled out my book to read on the long flight to Charleston.

I think she found everything humorous and much she could relate to until she reached Chapter 53, "The Mother of the Bride's Dress is In". As she read through the text she said she began to feel ill. For the first time a wave of anxiety came across her. It seemed that she had selected a MOB dress earlier and left it in Charleston to be altered. She, too, would not have her final fitting until just before the wedding.

I'm not even sure she finished the book. As it turned out, her dress was lovely, fit her well and the wedding went off without a hitch.
